COACHING MATTERS
COACHING MATTERS
The best soccer coaches do more than run drills—they help young players grow as athletes, teammates, and people. Our USSF qualified coaches are committed to continuous improvement, both in their own craft and in how they develop every player who steps onto our fields. They invest in ongoing training, share what they learn with one another, and bring that same growth mindset to every practice. Because we believe that when our coaches keep getting better, our players do too.
On the field, that means age-appropriate training that meets each player where they are—building technical skills, game understanding, and a genuine love for the sport. Off the field, it means helping young people develop the qualities that matter most: teamwork, resilience, confidence, accountability, and respect for teammates, opponents, and officials alike. These are the traits that carry kids well beyond soccer—into classrooms, future careers, and the kind of adults they’ll grow into.
But what makes our club special goes beyond what happens between the lines. We’re a community first—families cheering for each other’s kids, players picking up teammates after a tough game, parents who become friends on the sideline, and coaches who genuinely care about who these young people become. We celebrate effort as much as results. We show up for one another in wins and in losses. And we believe every player, no matter their level, deserves to feel like they belong here.
Every season is a chance to get a little better, support one another a little more, and build something we’re all proud to be part of. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to—and it’s what we hope every player, family, and coach takes with them long after the final whistle.

ARE COACHES USSF QUALIFIED?
ARE COACHES USSF QUALIFIED?
All of our coaches are USSF licensed and USSF qualified. Volunteer coaches are the heart and soul of competitive youth soccer. They bring a passion for the game that transcends getting paid. Their dedication allows leagues and clubs to offer competitive programs at accessible prices, making the beautiful game available to a wider range of young players. These coaches aren’t just there for the wins – they mentor, inspire, and celebrate the growth of each player. Their time and expertise has become a gift that shapes not only soccer skills, but also the confidence and work ethic that young athletes carry with them far beyond the final whistle.
ARE COACHES PAID?
ARE COACHES PAID?
We believe competitive youth soccer thrives on a dynamic partnership between paid and volunteer coaches. Paid coaches, with extensive experience and advanced certifications, bring a strategic vision and technical expertise to the team. They provide one-on-one support, coach mentorship, and foster a positive team environment. Together, this combined force creates a well-rounded program that pushes players to excel while fostering a love for the game. Their complementary strengths ensure a holistic approach to player development, making the club able to deliver on our strategic goals.
For those parents who wish to invest in additional coaching for their players, we will be offering additional paid coaching opportunities that can be provided as individual coaching or in small groups. Such plans can be purchased via the club, with more details coming soon.
CONTINUING COACH EDUCATION
CONTINUING COACH EDUCATION
In the fast-paced world of competitive youth soccer, staying ahead of the curve is crucial. That’s where continuing coach education comes in. It’s not just about ticking a box to renew a certification. Our programs offer our coaches access to the latest training methods, tactical advancements, and insights into player development. By constantly learning and refining their skills, our USSF qualified coaches can adapt their approach to get the best out of their players, both individually and as a team. This ongoing education ensures they remain effective mentors, able to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of competitive soccer and empower young athletes to reach their full potential. Mt Diablo Soccer Mustang retain a Director of Coach Education.
WHAT IS A PROFESSIONAL COACH?
WHAT IS A PROFESSIONAL COACH?
The term is commonly used in competitive youth soccer, and in some instances a professional coach is suitable. However, we believe there is an important difference between a paid coach and a professional coach.
A professional coach is defined as someone who is “a person engaged in a specified activity, especially a sport or branch of the performing arts, as a main paid occupation rather than as a hobby”.
Many times parents will expect a professional coach but will be receiving a paid coach with the same licensing qualifications and time investment as a volunteer coach.
Referees in club soccer are paid, but are not professional.
